In any moving project, there are a great number of tasks that can feel overwhelming, but one of the most time-consuming and complicated parts of the process is packing. For an easy and stress-free experience, many people opt to hire professionals that know exactly how to pack moving boxes, but many others take the time to learn how to do it on their own.
At A-1 Fargo, our moving experts are well-trained in the art of professional packing. We take pride in making sure that our customers’ items are safe and well-secured throughout the moving process. In this article, our team shares some of our favorite tips on packing like a professional, for those that prefer the challenge of a DIY packing experience.
Prepare Your Packing Supplies
Before you start with the actual packing, make sure you’re prepared with all of the essential packing supplies you’ll need to effectively execute the process These materials include the following:
- Moving Boxes: The best way to move your belongings is with strong moving boxes. It doesn’t matter if you buy new ones or recycle used boxes—just make sure that they are well-made, sturdy, and have lids that can be sealed. For small heavy items, small- to medium-sized moving boxes are recommended, while lightweight items can go in large boxes.
- Packing Tape: Buy heavy-duty packing tape to ensure that the boxes are sealed properly.
- Bubble Wrap, Blankets, Furniture Pads, Packing Paper: These provide a layer of protection especially for fragile items.
- Ziplock or Plastic Bags: These are for tiny parts and pieces.
- Labeling Materials: Labeling supplies may not important seem like packing supplies, but they are actually helpful when keeping track of the contents in each moving box and the room where they’re supposed to be placed, making the unpacking much easier and faster. Instead of labeling materials, you can also use a Sharpie or another type of permanent marker to label each box directly onto the surface.
Pack Each Room One by One
Break the huge task of packing into smaller tasks by packing up room by room over the course of a few weeks. Sort through the items in each room and decide which ones can be donated, sold, or brought with you in your new home. Don’t forget that boxes will most likely be stacked in the moving vehicle, so don’t put too many items in each one to the point that the moving boxes are already bulging.
Put Extra Attention in Packing Fragile Items
Individually pack fragile items such as glasses and dishes using packing paper. Next, stack three to five bowls or glasses and then wrap packing paper around the bundle once again. Finally, place them together in the same box—dishes must be positioned on their sides, while glasses must be placed upside down. For mirrors and artwork, it is recommended to use specialty boxes. Once the box is sealed securely, mark it with a “Fragile” or “Handle with Care” sign.
Keep the Box Under 50 Pounds
It was mentioned earlier that you shouldn’t over stuff each box. However, not because there’s still space, you should put more items in a single box without considering the weight of the box as a whole. Boxes that are over 50 pounds are more difficult to move, and there is a higher chance that the bottom of the box will collapse. Fill in remaining space with packing materials, towels, or other soft materials.
